Cabinet Knob – Choosing the Quality

Posted By on May 4, 2010

When you’re in the market for new cabinet hardware for your home don’t just pick out the first item that catches your eye. While you may not realize it right now one cabinet knob may not be as good as the next. Instead, you need to learn a little bit more about the construction and quality of any knob you are considering putting in your home before you buy. Taking a little time to do some research upfront will save you what could be a lot of frustration and a lot of extra spending in the long run.

Construction

The first thing you need to look at is how well the cabinet knob is constructed. Sadly, they are not all constructed alike. When it comes to where they attach to your cabinetry, some have a very small screw that barely attaches to the knob and only goes a little ways into your cabinet. In the worst cases, these screws are sometimes just glued to the back of the knob. This is a disaster waiting to happen. The first time the drawer catches or doesn’t pull out smoothly you may well snap the knob off right in your hand.

Quality Materials

The next thing you need to know is that quality materials were used in the construction of these particular knobs. Even if they look like they’ve been made well, if they have sub par materials that are being used in the process they may be weaker than they should be. For example, if a weak metal is used for the screw attachment on the back of the knob, it may be more prone to breaking off, leaving half of the screw in your drawer and the other half in the knob. Likewise, if the material the knob itself is made out of is sub par it could actually fall apart in your hands.

What It Can Handle

Now the problem when there is a breakdown is not always the fault of the cabinet knob. Sometimes people don’t read what the knobs are supposed to be able to do, and ultimately not do, and cause the problems themselves. Cabinet hardware is made to be able to handle a certain load. These can differ. Some cabinet knobs are more delicate and are meant for light doors and possibly small drawers. Others are heavy duty and can pull even the heaviest door or drawer. This is something you’ll need to research before you make a purchase in order to know which option you should go with.

Guaranteed

One of the final things you may want to look for is a company that offers a guarantee with each cabinet knob that you buy. This isn’t to say that you’re going to want to return everything if there is any slight problem with them, but by offering a guarantee it shows you that a company stands behind their product. Often, this is also a way to know that you’re looking at a more quality product that should last you for a long while.
