Royal weddings 2

Many people enjoy collecting royal memorabilia such as commemorative mugs of coronations, royal birthdays and jubilees. However nothing creates more excitement than a royal wedding. The recent marriage of Prince William, the future King, to Catherine Middleton has been a bonanza for souvenir makers and mementoes have been produced and sold in huge quantities.

Recent royal memorabilia is unlikely to become an investment and command high prices for many years. The market for royal keepsakes fluctuates depending on due how much media attention the subject receives. For example, memorabilia of Princess Diana, including souvenirs of her marriage to Prince Charles became highly collectable in the months following her death.

Serious collectors will want to spend more money on high class goods such as fine china plates and cups from well known makers and these quality items may well show a good return in the future.

For most people, collecting royal wedding mementoes is simply a way of showing patriotism and also of buying a little piece of history to hand down to future generations and it is quite possible to build up a reasonable collection without a huge financial outlay. It is important to only buy items that appeal to you personally and the potential future value of them should be of secondary importance.

The most popular royal wedding souvenirs are mugs, plates and glassware. Most are inscribed with the date of the marriage and portraits of the happy couple. If you have been inspired to start a collection, auctions and antique shops are good places to start looking for memorabilia of previous royal marriages. Memorabilia commemorating Queen Elizabeth’s wedding, to Prince Philip in 1947, is worth looking out for as the souvenirs were not mass produced owing to the economic climate just after the Second World War. They cost a bit more but would make a lovely addition to a collection.

Collecting Royal wedding memorabilia is an interesting and enjoyable pastime as well as being a delightful reminder of the sentiments of the time.
